Key Takeaways: Qigong Movements for Beginners

The Connecting to Heaven movement is a gentle, beginner-friendly Qigong exercise that links breath, intention, and flowing arm motions.

Practicing 18 repetitions (9 up-and-out, 9 reverse flow) takes about 5–10 minutes and can easily fit into a daily routine.

Coordinating your breath with movement helps calm the mind, lift your spirit, and create a sense of lightness in the body.

Focusing on sensations in the palms (warmth, tingling, pulsing) strengthens your ability to feel and work with Qi.

After practice, you can rest your hands on areas that need support, using intention and visualization to direct healing energy.

This movement can be done standing or seated, indoors or outdoors, making it accessible for most beginners and those with limited mobility.

Begin with Ready Position

Stand in a relaxed Qigong stance. (Ready Position) Hands are down by your side.

Bring your hands in front of your Lower Dantian (just below the navel). Your hands are  shoulder width apart, palms facing each other.

Lift and Flow with Your Breath

Inhale: Gently lift your hands forward and upward in front of your body. When your hands are higher than your head, move them to the sides and down at a 45 degree angle. On the way down, your palms are facing towards the earth.

When your hands are down at your sides, bring them to the front (shoulder width apart facing each other) and repeat this flowing movement up to 9 times, inhaling deeply through your nose on the way up and exhaling softly through your nose or mouth on the way down. The intent is to move your arms in a big circle.

Reverse the Flow

After completing 9 repetitions, reverse the pattern.

Raise your hands upward in a 45-degree arc, palms facing the earth. When your arms reach the top, bring them close together (about shoulder width apart).

Exhale: Lower your hands down through the centerline to your ready position.

Repeat this reversed flow up to 9 times, maintaining synchronized breathing.

Breath naturally, inhaling through the nose on the way up and exhale through the nose or mouth on the way down.

Exhale: Belly contracts

Feel the Qi

Sensing Qi in the Palms

After the exercises, you may notice sensations in your palms, such as warmth, tingling, or a pulsating feeling. These sensations indicate the presence of Qi, which has been activated through your practice.

Developing sensitivity to these feelings enhances your ability to direct energy intentionally within your body.

Directing Qi to Areas Needing Attention

With heightened awareness of the Qi in your palms, gently place your hands over an area of your body that requires healing or relief. For instance, if experiencing lower back discomfort, position your palms over that region.

Visualize the energy flowing from your hands into the affected area, promoting healing and balance. This method aligns with Qigong's principles of self-healing, where focused intention and energy work together to restore health.
